You dont have to be rich to do a bit of this actually

RIP Medical Debt is a charity (and therefore takes donations). They buy the rights to medical debt and then forgive them. So far they’ve forgiven over 1B in medical debt.

So a little ray of hope for someone out there today.

helloquirks:

Okay but now I know what I want to do of I get rich?

Oliver then proceeded to detail how with $50 and knowledge of the law he was able to successfully apply online to create a debt buying company named “Central Asset Recovery Professionals,” or as Oliver put it, “CARP” named after “a bottom-feeding fish.”

After setting up a rudimentary website for CARP, the satirical, but still real company was offered a $15 million package of medical debt for $60,000.

Oliver explained that the debt was out of statute, which means it is the kind of debt that a collector can only continue to collect, but not sue the debtor for.

Then, instead of chasing down the 9,000 debtors in the debt package as a normal collection agency would, Oliver decided to stage the largest one-time giveaway in television history and work with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt to forgive the $15 million with no consequences for the debtors.

naonic-blog:

Donating $10 buys $1,000 of medical debt. This is real, it works, and we’ve done it ourselves. You can too.

A priceless gift everyone can afford.

this is going to sound like such a little sibling ass take but i genuinely believe that being a little bit annoying is actually a greater sign of maturity and self awareness than being universally likeable and on good terms with everyone

if some people find me annoying and can’t stand me because of how i think and act then that means i’m a fully realized human being with my own personality and opinions and free will and not just a reflective surface for other people’s desires, which is in fact a good thing despite what people who want you to just be a reflection of their own opinions and desires will tell you, and why being considered “cringe” or whatever doesn’t bother me at all

also it’s really funny when you’re confident enough in yourself to know that people not liking you isn’t always a sign that you’re the problem. like there’s something undeniably hilarious about being aware your mere existence has the power to piss someone off and ruin their day and i recommend embracing it.

life is for taking therapeutic walks and being in your own bubble and reading books in bed and drinking iced beverages and eating fruit and gaining new experiences and dozing in sunlight and finding love in everything and not letting guilt consume your life actually

I cannot stress this enough & cant believe it has to be said: DO NOT SHIP THE TWO POPES (Francis and Benedict) IN “the two popes”.

I mean it. Firstly, they’re both real people. Secondly, they’re popes. Thirdly, they’re real popes.

This post is a distant shark fin in this big blue ocean of a website

I just heard my mom tell my brother, “when you die, you will go outside and garden until your father says you’re done” and it took me a second to realize that my brother was playing a videogame and this was not a theological discussion.

elizabeth bennet said “i can’t fix him nor would I for a million dollars” and fitzwilliam darcy said “wait she thinks I need to be fixed? …. she’s right, I’ve gotta work on myself and learn how to be more understanding and generous” and then he did. and elizabeth was like “shit…. he’s so understanding and generous now…. makes me realize that my stubbornness and pride in my discernment are obstacles in the lives of myself and others” and then they got married and that’s why pride and prejudice has been a bestseller for two hundred years

The fact that humans can be killed through physical means is so ridiculous to me

Like this sounds wild but like. hear me out. a person is such a ridiculously infinitely complicated web of thoughts and feelings and beliefs and such an unbelievably huge amount of knowledge and the idea that you can destroy that by holding a pillow over someone’s face for three minutes is absolutely surreal. The idea that you can remove knowledge and emotion and memory from the world with a physical object is literally unbelievable. people are literally infinitely huge and complex and the fact that you can kill the person by killing the body is wild. I’m sure this is incoherent but I hope you get it

It’s like. Imagine you threw a fist-sized rock at the empire state building and the entire thing and everything inside it collapsed into dust. That’s what the existence of human death feels like
